Mission

The International Center (IC) is a Washington, DC based 501(c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 1977 to focus on issues between the United States and the developing world. Over the years the International Center has had projects in Asia, Africa, Latin America and with the former Soviet Union. The International Center has four projects, the U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council Education Forum, the New Forests Project, Veterans International/Cambodia, and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation.

Projects

U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council’s Education Forum

The U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council’s Education Forum works to provide assistance in the US and Vietnam to enhance understanding of the trade policy issues that affect Vietnam’s goal of global integration, membership in WTO, APEC, and ASEAN and in bi-lateral relations. The Forum currently receives U.S. government and private sector grants for programs on international trade norms and best practices, governance and transparency, providing in-country and overseas educational programs for key representatives of Vietnam’s public and private sectors.

New Forests Project

The New Forests Project works to support renewable and self-sustaining grassroots efforts in agroforestry, reforestation, protection of watersheds, water and sanitation, and global climate change issues. Water and sanitation projects in Honduras and El Salvador provide technical assistance and train instructors in rural communities in managing their water systems. Through the World Seed Program, NFP has provided free seeds, educational support and small-scale irrigation equipment to over 4,500 communities throughout Africa and Latin America.

Veterans International/Cambodia

In 2009, Veterans International/Cambodia (VI/C) became a part of The International Center. Veterans International’s mission is to rehabilitate people living with disabilities in Cambodia and help them to lead active, fulfilling lives. Our goal is to support victims of war and poverty who are often marginalized in their society. We give them the tools to build better lives for themselves and their families, empowering them to become respected members of their communities with equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities.

Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation

In 2009, Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF) began working under The International Center. In 1997, VVAF co-founded the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, for which it received the Nobel Peace Prize. VVAF now operates a number of humanitarian programs in Vietnam.

The International Center Sports Corps

Working with partners around the world and in the US, the International Center’s Sports Corps Division builds upon existing relationships to further improve understanding between the people of developing countries and the United States through youth sports. Focused on young female athletes and their coaches, our programs organize sports-related activities in each country and in the United States for target participants; provide leadership, educational, and injury prevention programming; and develop and implement related cultural and social activities and events.
