USVTC/HCMC General Sciences Library IPR Seminar Series Trademark Protection and Copyright Workshop for Librarians August 12, 2004 The U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council & Education Forum and the General Sciences Library of Ho Chi Minh City organized two seminars on intellectual property rights issues. More than 300 people attended the two seminars including lawyers, judges, government officials and business representatives.The seminar on “Copyright Protection Issues for Librarians” was specially designed for employees from the General Sciences Library and other university libraries in Ho Chi Minh City. Mr. Doan Hong Son, a consultant for Rouse & Co. International (whose associated Vietnamese law firm is DHS Law Office), provided an overview of copyright protection issues in Vietnam and discussed copyright policies and practices at public educational facilities. The librarians were genuinely concerned about the impact of Vietnam’s accession to the Berne Convention to their work practices. While many are frustrated by the inability to adequately protect artistic and literary works others expressed concern that new requirements will only serve to further limit access to important works.
The General Sciences Library is
also home to the IPR Reference Collection, the most comprehensive
collection of IPR books and materials in Vietnam. Both seminars were
designed to complement and facilitate the use of the IPR Reference
Collection, maintained specifically for textbooks, journals, laws and
other resources on intellectual property rights, protection and
enforcement. The collection, sponsored by the U.S.-Vietnam Trade
Council and members’ donations, opened to the public on February 16,
2004. It is our hope that this public collection could be useful to
judges, attorneys, professors, students, and the business community and
serve to enhance overall understanding and application of intellectual
