Biography of CPV General Secretary Nong Duc Manh

Nong Duc Manh was born on September 11, 1940 to an ethnic Tay farming family in Cuong Loi village, Na Ri District, Bac Can Province.  He joined the Communist Party of Viet Nam on July 5, 1963

CAREER HISTORY

1958-1961: Student of Middle-level Agriculture-Forestry College, Ha Noi

1962-1965: Technician at the provincial Forestry Office in Bac Can

1965-1966: Student of Ha Noi Foreign Languages College, majoring in Russian.

1966-1971: Studied at the Forestry Institute, Leningrad, the Soviet Union.

1972-1973: Deputy head of the Inspection Board of the provincial Forestry Office of Bac Thai Province.

1973-1974: Director of the Phu Luong State Forestry Camp in Bac Thai.

1974-1976: Studied at the Nguyen Ai Quoc Party High-level School.

1976-1980: Member of the Bac Thai Party Committee, deputy director of the Provincial Forestry Office and director of the Construction Company of the Forestry Office of Bac Thai, and director of the Forestry Office.

1980-1983: Member of the Provincial Party Committee, and deputy chairman of the People’s Committee of Bac Thai.

1984-October 1986: Deputy secretary of provincial Party Committee, and chairman of the People’s Committee of Bac Thai.

November 1986-February 1989: Secretary of the Bac Thai Party Committee, and alternate member of the Central Committee of the CPV (Sixth Congress).

March 1989: Full member of the Central Committee of the CPV (Sixth Congress).

August 1989: Chairman of the Nationalities Commission of the Party Central Committee.

November 1989: Deputy to the Eighth National Assembly, and vice chairman of the NA’s Council of Nationalities.

June 1991: Member of the Political Bureau of the Party Committee (Seventh Congress).

September 1992-1996: Chairman of the Ninth National Assembly.

June 1996: Member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee (Eighth Congress).

September 1997: Chairman of the Tenth National Assembly, and member of the Standing Board of the Political Bureau of the CPV.

April 2001: Elected General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee at the Ninth National Party Congress.
