Singapore
and Vietnam concluded bilateral market access negotiations in the
context of the accession of Vietnam to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The negotiations were held in Hanoi on 24 – 25 November 2004.
The
conclusion of the market access negotiations between both countries will
help facilitate access of Singapore companies into the Vietnamese
market, further enhancing the strong economic and trade linkages between
the two countries. In 2003, Vietnam was Singapore's 17th largest trading
partner, with bilateral trade reaching S$5.98 billion.
Vietnam
applied for WTO membership in 1995, and has been conducting bilateral
market access talks with interested WTO members. The conclusion of
bilateral talks between Singapore and Vietnam is a demonstration of
Singapore's firm support for Vietnam's efforts to join the WTO.
